Guava juice is sweet and delicious. Stir in some lime juice, a splash of your favorite tequila or rum, give it a quick stir and top with a sprig of mint. You're golden. This refreshing guava lime margarita co*cktail comes together in minutes. No blender needed!
Guava Origins and Background
Guava or guayaba in Spanish is a tropical fruit from the guava tree, and grows abundantly from Southern Mexico and through Central America. Guava's origins are uncertain because it has been carried by man and birds throughout many geographical points. Although they were only introduced in Florida in 1847, there is mention of guavas in the West Indies as far back as 1526. Guavas are one of the leading fruits of Mexico and a major commercial source in India. There are a few different varieties of guava fruit with different interior flesh: white, yellow, pink, or red. Guava trees can grow up to 30 feet if left to the whims of nature.
The fruit has a lot of pulp and has a tastes a bit like papaya or pear and strawberry combined with a slightly tart flavor. Fresh guavas are a delicious fruit and can be eaten whole except for the stem. Because of the amount of pulp it is sold as a nectar, which is thicker than juice. You can also find it sold as guava paste which is similar to canned cranberries in consistency. I love to use guava paste to make Latin American turnovers called pastelitos de guava. Read on to learn how to use guava nectar to make delicious fruity co*cktails.
Step by step photos to make a Guava margaritas:
- Step 1: Gather all your ingredients, guava nectar, tequila, limes and mint.
- Step 2: Squeeze fresh limes into a pitcher. I love my combo Zulay lemon lime squeezer for this!
- Step 3: Measure the fresh lime juice and add ½ ounce to the glass.
- Step 4: Pour in 3 ounces guava nectar.
- Step 5: Pour in 1 shot or ounce of white tequila aka blanco tequila.
- Step 6: Stir with a spoon and garnish with a slice of lime wedge and fresh mint. Enjoy!
Guava nectar is very nutritious, well maybe not once you add tequila, but you know what I mean. Guavaspossess vitamin C, B complex, various vitamins as well as lycopenes which are helpful in cancer fighting.
Drink Variations for Guava co*cktails
- Rum: If you are not a fan of tequila you can swap it for white rum. You can muddle the lime, 1 tsp of simple syrup and mint in the glass before adding the other ingredients. This version is a great guava mojito recipe. Guava rum co*cktails are great!
- Frothy: You can add the ingredients to a co*cktail shaker with lot of ice cubes and give it a shake! Pour this into a chilled co*cktail glass, martini glass or margarita glass.
- Spritzer: Make the drink according to the recipe but put it in a highball glass to allow room for club soda or soda water on top. You now have a fizzy and fruity drink.
- Guava cosmopolitan: Use 2 ounces vodka, 1 ounce orange liqueur like Cointreau or triple sec, 1 ounce guava nectar, 1 ounce fresh lime juice. Place all in a co*cktail shaker with ice, shake and pour into a martini glass. Garnish with an orange twist.
This refreshing guava lime co*cktail goes great with mini empanadas, mango tomatillo salsa, or a nice shrimp ceviche. Really, just about any appetizer your little heart desires is a good complement to this refreshing and delicious drink. But don't keep this co*cktail all to yourself, share with your friends!
